 hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me, in the USA...what system or medical help do you have for people who have a disability? do you have like a disability pension? and help with the cost of medication? help with say the cost of wheelchairs and modification for your home...
In Australia if you have a disability you get free goverment assistance, any medication is only $5.00 per proscription dosn't matter how much it costs...wheelchairs 95% is paid for over a certain amount, there is a waiting list but not more than a year...any spinal clinic visit's are free and so are my MRI's, thysio is also free...
was just wondering what systems are available in the US or other countries??

I think I can speak for most of us here from the US that when reading your post, we kind of chuckle initially and think to ourselves "are you serious" and/or we "don't want to hear it" (no offense to you). What I mean is, unfortunately we are not blessed with such good fortune. We do have programs available but it is not a given and they are definitely not free! If anyone disagrees with me, please let me know. I don't want to offend anyone. I'm being sincere when I say to you that I'm happy for you! P.S. I do want to clarify however that I love my Country and am very proud to be an American! |

hey guy's I don't mean to offend anyone...i was just wondering how it is in other countries...all of these benifits are only possible because it's paid for through the tax payers....it's not really free...it's like take from the rich give to the poor type of thing....there is a waiting list...

WOW - I am impressed that you have so much offered to you for disability. I wish it were like that here in the USA but unfortunately it is not. I am in the process of going through the disability process and it is a nightmare to say the least. There is a ton of paperwork and it seems that everything is under "suspection". Maybe I should move to Australia, the weather has to be better than here in Wisconsin - HA

I don't think you offended anyone. But it is a subject that can touch off heated debates in our country. You know, Socialistic practices versus Capitalistic practices. And it is an election cycle here. Though I eat, sleep, breathe Capitalism as my foundational beliefs, I see no need to be offended by those w/opposing points of view. And there is always middle ground (compromise) that tends to make the most common sense. That said, I think it's wonderful when someone truly in need of proper medical attention and/or aftercare can get it.... no matter how that need is met and so long as it's legal. I think offering proper care is the most humane thing to do as a minimum. It saddens me and I literally lose sleep thinking about those I hear of who can not or did not receive medically necessary services. As Deb mentioned, the system here can be very trying. On the federal level we have Disability, Social Security and Social Security Disability. On the State level there are many different programs for those in need. Each state is at least slightly different. Some state distributed programs are tied to and at least partially funded at the federal level. confused yet? I am. Honestly!  |

I'm going though the disability process now myself, I'm between a walking stick and a wheelchair...I had been putting my money aside because I knew that this was just around the corner...I knew that there was support out there...but I had no idea that any equipment such as wheelchairs, even beds would be supplied by the goverment...their isn't much paper work for me, but the spinal clinic where I've been going to is organizing all this for me, the spinal clinic itself is a team of specialists, doctors, nurses, OT's, physiotherapists, seating specialist and even a social worker...you get to see all of these specialized people, then they recommend what is needed... I'm very overwhelmed of how much help i'm getting...I even have home visit's to see that I'm coping at home all at no cost to me...I don't know what kind of wheelchair I will get, I have to go to a seating clinic and have a seat molded to my back...it will take time but at least I don't have to worry about money...I can see why the call Australia the lucky county...so what about other counties then?Deb: you are going though this same process, what's it like for you? emotionally too?....i'm finding it tough!here is a link u might want to look at:
