Good wishes for the op. Recovery is related to the tumour (location and size) the op and I believe your attitude. Eat well and walk as much as you can as quickly as you can.

You'll be ok. I was diagnosed early dec 2013 and was quickly booked into surgeryIt was the most terrifying time of my life, especially as the symptoms got worse in the end and I could barely walk or use my hands. It's 6 months later now and I can hike 6-8 kms, tie my shoes and eat with a fork again. The first 1-2 months after surgery are hard, you think you'll never be able to take care if yourself again. It helps to have good people around and do the exercises for rehab - really do them and it will fix itself. Good luck. The success rate is very high.

Welcome Limpingcat. Love the name. Sounds like you are doing very well.
I too am traveling well, Jennn. I had my surgery in Dec 2013 and I returned to work part time yesterday. Signed off to do everything but play rugby by the surgeon. No risk of me suddenly signing up to play scrum but going to attempt everything else. Physio reckons it just about building up strenght

Hi, Jenn. I hope you feel better after your spinal tap! The only advice I can offer you is to choose your neurosurgeon wisely after researching her/him thoroughly. This is the time to get someone who is excellent. And now for the encouragement: It is most definitely possible to remove an intramedullary spinal cord tumor and have a full, happy, excellent life after. I'm happy to report that I had my tumor removed a few months ago and I'm doing great now. The recovery requires patience and a positive attitude because it can take time and some of the sensations can be odd, (many people get worse for a while post-surgery) but my "new normal" is fully functional and happy. Hang in there- Glad to hear you are going well Bird!

Hi Jennn,
Thought I'd drop by to see if you're OK. I do hope that your operation was a success and that you are doing well. We are still thinking of you!
Take care,
Leah

Two weeks post op and doing well. I came home after one week and home health pt and ot are helping. The main problem is my right hand. I'm pretty much starting from scratch with limited mobility and even less strength. But I'm kicking this in the butt and overcoming it. My surgery was performed by Dr. Gerald Rodts at Emory university in Atlanta, Ga and him and his team are wonderful!!!

About 80% of the tumor was removed so now I'm waiting on pathology reports to determine if more treatment is necessary.

Hi Jennn,
I'm so pleased to hear that you are doing well and staying so upbeat. It's good that they managed to successfully resect most of your tumour and you can focus on the recovery process. The physios should be able to help you improve your hand function and mobility over time. Hang in there and stay strong!
