Ron, once all the meds are out of your system, it will start to settle down. Then if you need something, it might not have to be such strong meds. Just something along the lines of maintainence. I wish you well, I know it is not an easy thing to go through. Cindy

Hi Ron, Hang in there, it must be rough trying to get off the meds. I'm still on lyrica, 300mg per day, but I've been able to drop 30 mg of nortriptylene as well as 15mg of clonazapam. I take a 10 mg of slow release morphine in the morning and that's the next med I'll be trying to drop. I still have about a 4 for pain all day long, so, its tough and worse after physio. I agree with Cindylee that once your body adjusts, the pain will get better. In the meantime we are all here pulling for you, and just an ear to listen to you and offer comfort and support. Take care, Lynne

Hi, I just joined this group today and had some questions about nerve pain. In Dec. I had a meningioma taken from my lumbar-1 and 2 vertebrae right before where my cauda equina nerves start and apparently they also took some tissue from one of the nerves there (my surgeon was sure it was a neurofibroma but it proved to be incorrect after the pathology came back). Anyways, for the past year I've had really bad nerve pain down my upper right leg and right knee as well as right hip-it's probably about a 9 when I'm sitting or standing longer than 10 min without Tylenol and I was wondering if anyone's pain has improved after their tumor was removed? My surgeon has been pretty vague about it, he just said I might have numbness-which I do in my left shin but it doesn't bother me-but hasn't really said much about my pain, just that it should go away. Anyways, reading everyone's posts has been helpful since a lot of people don't really understand the nerve pain. I'm 21 and can hardly tolerate even sitting in class without popping tylenol at least 40 minutes before I leave, which I hope I won't have to do forever since I'm the type who likes to avoid taking any medications. Long story short, is there any time length I should expect to be more pain free or should I just hope for the best?

hi sarah, I had an ependamoma tumor in L1-L5, removed in 1986 & 87, I have similar pain in my legs and hips ever since, sometimes I take Advil, sometimes I stretch and massage them on my own, sometimes I take a hot bath, sorry I don't have positive news but it may be something you'll have to live with. You didn't mention using a cane or walking device so I assume you don't use any. I started using a cane about 6yrs ago, I might not have needed it if I had stayed more physically active, if you get a career sitting down all day, be sure to stay active, either riding a bike, swimming, walking, anything to keep your legs strong. hope this helps you some, take care Darren

Sarah...sorry to hear that you are now an SCTA survivor, but it's nice to meet you. I also had a tumor at the same area as yours. I am three years out and still have pain from time to time. You are still very early out from surgery..it was in December, if I read your post correctly. You will definetly need some pain meds for now. And if you get by with just Tylenol, that is wonderful. I also get the pain in my hip and legs from time to time. I have a tough time standing or sitting for any length of time too. It does get better. And it does help to move. That keeps your muscles from tightening up too much. You will find what works best for you. There is no time limit I can give you as everyone of us heals differently. I don't think there is anyone here on the boards who is completely pain free, even years after their surgeries. You will find a way that works for you to deal with the pain...and some nerves do re-generate, but it takes time. And it is painful. You are still healing. When they poke around in our spines, it take a while for everything to settle back down. I wish you well...Cindy
