World-renown neurosurgeon Dr. Arnold Menezes at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics completely resected my T10-L5 intramedullary astrocytoma in 1993. I have been 100% tumor-free for 15 years and nearly all function returned post-resection, despite being in late stages of the disease at that time (including neurogenic bladder, bowel and sexual function). In fact, after extensive physical therapy and rehab (I had to re-learn how to walk), I was able to remain with my college track team for four years, even though I was of course never near 100% of my pre-illness ability. I do still have sensory impairment, but motor function has returned to normal ranges. Dr. Menezes is an expert in skull-base deformities as well, so please contact him for pediatric patients with brain stem neoplasms. He is a wonderful teacher and mentor and has an ability to make you believe in yourself. www.uihealthcare.com/depts/med/neurosurgery/faculty/menezes.html
