My husband is a SCT survivior, surgery three years ago. He has severe neuropathy and takes several meds: neurontin as well as some narcotics, and antidepressants. I am very worried about his mental/emotional well being and am wondering how these drugs are affecting his brain chemistry. He is seeing pain specialists for meds but nothing seems to help either physically or mentally. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Did he ever try Lyrica? It made a big difference in my life. If he seems depressed you should be worried. Sometimes docs like to hand out the pills. Maybe a counsellor might be a good idea. They could tell more if he is depressed or anxious. I wish you all the best. Lynne

Pain is a very difficult thing to understand when it comes to someone you love. Especially when they are in pain everyday. I used to ask my husband everyday..."how do you feel" and I think he wanted to kill me. Believe me, some of the answers he gave me were priceless. We devised an easy little system to help me better understand how he feels everyday. Now, he tells me on a scale of 1-10 how he feels. This helps me judge if the pain is under control or if its getting worse, or better. For example, if everyday if between a 5-6 on average....then all of a sudden #8's start popping up, I know somethings up. He never complains about anything, so this is the best ways for me to keep aprised of how things are going. Believe me, he still hates me asking everyday, but at least now i understand better.

Hi Lynne - Lyrica made me GAIN WEIGHT! - besides feeling lousy I didn't need to be fatter!! I switched to Neurontin (Gabapentin) - BUT - neither works - at least I lost 10 lbs. as soon as I switched!! HA! I do use Clonzopan at bedtime and I sleep like a 'rock'.......I only use half the pill because I don't want to get too used to it....I've tried - no pill and I'm up after 3-4 hrs. Some days are better than others for me too - seems indiscriminately?? Good Luck! Renee
