I had L2-L3 laminectomy in June of 2017 to remove IE myxopapillary Ependymoma.
6-8 months after my surgery I started having low back pain, sciatica, like a cold feeling down my leg, etc. So I returned to see my ns. He kind of shrugged his shoulders and told me to lose weight.
I finally went for my first annual mri (to check for recurrence) this past October. The results are as follows...
T11-T12: broad central disc protrusion that flattens and deforms thecal sac - no significant stenosis
L3-L4: hypertrophic changes to facet joints and ligamentum flavum -no significant stenosis
L4-L5: left subarticular and foraminal disc protrusion which lies adjacent to the traversing L4 roots which could be irritated. This mildly narrows the neural foramen. The right neural foramen is preserved.
L5-S1: a minimal disc bulge without compromise of thecal sac or neural foramina. The facets are relatively preserved.
I now have an answer to my pain (L4/5 protrusion). I know the other stuff is likely not causing problems at the moment, but I hate thinking what sort of pain I might be in a few years from now.
How did all of this happen to my spine in just 2 years?
Is this normal after laminectomy? Had my spine been compromised?
My ns said there was nothing to this...I was lead to believe that I would be back to normal after my surgery. This sucks because I didn't have any back pain before my surgery. Just some constant aching in my legs.
What do you all make of this? Is this normal? Is this to be expected?

I have not experienced it nor seen anyone yet, but I have high hopes that you will recover and combat that battle soon.

Hi Audj, I do not know whether it is normal to get such things but your comments read very similar to mine. I suspect the operation puts more stress on other parts of the back. Plus some are just a normal part of aging. My NS shows no interest in these changes either. But I am eternally grateful as I am alive and moving.
