Well I am starting a new thread... I had asked some questions on my old one "Pain Dr" and no one responded....

So... Has anyone ever had botox for pain? I went to the neurologist and he was going to do an EMG today. (looking for a pinched nerve in my neck) I told him I did not think he was going to find a pinched nerve. I think it is all muscular. I have now been waking up with Charley horses in my right leg ALWAYS my right side... any pain cramping headaches it is on my right side! The neurologist said he thought I was right... and that I am an anomily...(a nice word for strange we decided) He thinks that Botox will help. He thinks my mussels in my neck are over reactive and causes the others to over compensate which causes pain... I said what is this from? My surgery? he said I think so don't you.? I said yes I just want to hear someone else say that rather than look for some other reason. Or as the pain Dr said it was from the Syrinx at one appointment then two appointments later wanted me to go to a NS for a pinched nerve in my neck. So now....Botox... Has anyone had it for mussel pain? Has it helped. The neurologist said that he is going to start with a low dose and see what happins... He does not want to use to much and over relax my mussels in my neck.... Now that makes me a little nervous, because I already feel that my head is to heavy for my neck. I do not want to go around holding it up with my hands!!!

Back Pain
Preliminary studies have suggested that, in patients who do not find relief from traditional pain medication, Botox® injections are safe and provide local relief of low back pain without systemic side effects (unlike central nervous system side effects seen with other more traditional pain treatments). In a small randomized trial of 31 adults with low back pain lasting longer than 6 months, 73% of participants who received injections reported significant pain relief after 3 weeks (Foster 2001). More studies—especially larger, randomized trials—are necessary to further evaluate the use of Botox®. Although there was initially concern that large doses repeatedly injected into the spinal muscles could lead to muscle weakness, this occurrence has not been noted in any studies (Difazio 2002; Wheeler 1998).

a friend of mine has to have botox injections in her neck since she has some condition called distonia (i think) and her head is always tilting to one side, and it helps her head stay upright. thought i'd pass that along

Hi Bethann, I'm awaiting a botox treatment to my left leg due to really tight tone, when i go from sitting in my wheelchair to bed it triggers a very painful spasm in my left leg, so I'm looking forward to the botox, it will relax the muscle and allow us to do some really intense stretching work on my left ankle area as the tendons have tightened, but it will also help with the pain, I also have been having charlie horses in my left leg for the past two months.........Best of luck if you decide to go ahead with it.

Lynne, please let us know if it helps. I have really bad tone in both legs and was thinking about botox as well, since stretching my legs requires a body builder these days.

Thanks to everyone who has commented! I am going on July 1st for my first set of Botox injections. The neurologist is going to start on low doses. I am looking forward to it. I hope it helps. I just have to make sure it is coded right for my new insurance! Also I found out the pain doctor I had been going to is not listed on my new insurance so I guess it is a good thing the neurologist told me to not go back to him!

I will let you all know how it goes! Maybe he can help me with the charley horses I have been getting too!! Every night now! I do not know what it is though! My legs were not affected with any paralysis but over active reflexes...So this may be a total different thing! Maybe I just need a vitamin!! BUT WHY ALWAYS ONLY THE RIGHT SIDE!

You're an anomaly? I was called a "fascinoma" a couple of weeks ago due to my odd array of pain and numbness. I said "oh! don't say that!" (I'm not ready for that, I've only been at this 6 months).

Hi!

Just wanted to add a little bit here our Insurance changed on July first! Anyone thinking of getting botox make sure your doctor codes it right so your insurance will cover it!! I double checked and it is okay for me.... would have bin an issue if coded for migraines or cosmetic! But what ever my doctor is coding it for I was told it was covered!!! I have a true LOVE HATE relationship with insurance... But from the sounds of it this one is great! I could go to any Dr that takes Blue Cross in the USA! No referral needed!!! And only $100. personal deductible and $200 for family!! I will meet mine real soon!
