WOW....I wish I found this site when I was diagnosed. October 4, 2010 I was referred to have an mri. My doctor thought I may have had a pinched nerve in my back. My symptom were pain in my lower back that radiated around to the groin area and some stenosis in my legs.
Nothing could have ever prepared me to be sitting in a doctors office for the mri results by myself and being told it is a tumor in my spine and he was referring me to a neurosurgeon. The tumor was pressing the nerves against the wall of the cord. I don't have my papers handy but they thought it was either a schwanoma or something else. We didn't find it was an ependymoma until after surgery.
I had a laminectomy 12-08-10. I was referred to an oncologist (cleared-just a consult) and a radiologist. I ended up having 28 radiation treatments to be sure all cells were gone.
I just recently had my yearly mri and there was no regrowth.....thank you Jesus.
The only long term effects I have is that if I walk for a distance, I have to sit for a few minutes. Once I relax the muscles I am ok for a bit but cant over due it. I am not sure if it is just weak muscles from the surgery or possibly nerve damage.
Thank you for a place to share my story.
