I had a tumor in 2005 on my T9. It was removed and turned out to be a benign schwannoma.
Following the surgery, I began to have a pinching sensation under my right lower rib cage. The doctors felt that it was "referred pain" from severing the nerve where the tumor was attached.
I suppose that is a plausible answer, however this pinching sensation has increased and almost feels like a "presence". It bothers me most when I am stressed.
Any of you have this experience?
Thanks!

Not quite sure what "referred pain" means? I could try to rationalize but just guessing.... Did the doctor explain anymore about it. I've never heard the term before. Can they give you anything for it where it seems to be getting worse?
Also are you saying it was "on" the T9 vertebrea and the nerve leaving it? Just curious....

According to Wikipedia, referred pain is a phenomenon used to describe pain perceived at a site adjacent to or at a distance from the site of an injury's origin.
So, I am experiencing a pain in the front of my body, but at the same level as where the tumor was removed.
As for my tumor, it was considered an intradural, extramedullary tumor. I believe that it was attached directly to the nerve.

Hi,
I had a schwannoma at T10-11, removed in 2005, as well. I have a numb patch on my side, just above my hip, resulting from the nerve that was sacrificed to remove the tumor. I have had no referred pain, but have had a spot just beside the surgical site that always seems to be in a painful knot.
I am wondering if the referred pain that you talk about is similar, on a smaller scale, to phantom limb pain that an amputee feels. That pain is due to the fact that the nerves to the limb were cut and still feel pain. The only thing that they can tell the brain is that the limb hurts, because that's how they're programmed.
My struggle has been pain in my back in the vicinity of the surgical site. It has been increasing over the last six months. I am wondering if I am developing arthritis in the vicinity of the laminectomies. May it is time to ask for an x-ray.
