Apparently i lived with my tumor for 20 years or so. I only knew i had a tumor for 3 1/2 weeks before it was removed. My symptons hadnt changed but my mindstate changed dramatically. I still have trouble believing that monster was growing in me all those years.
As kansas mom says focus on staying sane and as relaxed as possible, if your surgeon thought it couldnt wait a few more weeks youd already be in the operating room.

Here's a hug from me too.  I was terrified before my first surgery, and still pretty scared before the second. Think positive and busy yourself with getting things ready at home for your return. Move things to be in easy reach, etc. Let friends and family help, and ask for help if you need it (that's my biggest failing.) I'll be thinking of you. Sandy |

That's great news shelbylyn, a pre-christmas present to get your tumor out early! There is not much time to prepare yourself mentally, but I found relaxation and positive thoughts calming.
As others have mentioned, lining up a good support system is key, so is stocking your freezer with healthy easy foods. My hubby bought me an ipad for my recovery - I watched movies, a few TV series, and got email and surfed the net in the hospital (and at home afterwards) - it was fantastic. If you don't have one see if you have a friend that would part with theirs for a while...
There are lots of positive outcomes for people with SCT (including myself - intradural tumor in L spine like yourself) and you feel good about your surgeon and facility - that is key!

Hello Shelbylyn,
I'm glad you feel more comfortable in your hospital of choice. Bring yourself something special for after surgery, like a special lotion, a special book or music or something little that may make you smile.
Before you know it you"ll be out of surgery and on your way to recovery. I pray all goes well for you this Friday. Looking forward to hearing from you afterward when you get back online. Blessings.

Thank you so much...I had surgery on 12/16/2011. Benign Schwannoma initial biopsy. I am so thankful...I received the best care as Mass General too... discharged 5 days post op. Doing well...still having some leg pain but not that bad...I am so thankful and follow up post op visit on 01/05/2012...will get more details Im sure at follow up regarding biopsy results.
