Hello,
I haven't been on much, just to read some posts once in awhile, so hope this question / topic hasn't already been discussed. Went to Dr. recently for numbness in my pinky - then to Neuro for a fun EMG to see if I had a pinched nerve in my elbow. No pinched nerve, although something was going on at the neck level, and he suspected a herniated disk, and asked how far I wanted to go w/ potential add'l testing or surgery given that I had no pain at the time, just numbness. Told him that one back surgery for a spinal tumor was more than enough back surgery for me, but that I wanted to be sure there were no add'l tumors. That took him aback (this was a new neuro for me) and once I briefed him on my Schwannoma / Meningioma at T9-T10, he started pondering NFS, so sent me for an MRI, with and w/o contrast (gaddolinium). I noticed that when I was done with MRI, I had a sunburn like rash on my chest. Didn't really hurt, but was warm and felt just like a sunburn. Then I remembered, I had gotten the same reaction on previous MRIs, but was so distracted w/ outcomes, that I had never noted it out loud before. So, I told the MRI technician, who informed the nurses and they asked me to wait 15 min or so to see if it was a reaction to the Gaddolinium. They didn't quite know what to do as they apparently had not seen that type of a reaction before. It started to fade, so I left.
A few months later, I had a second MRI, and this time I notified everyone upfront that I had gotten a sunburn rash on a recent MRI, so they had some internal discussions, wondering if it was the Gaddolinium as well. They decided to go ahead but pulled me out of machine to check me BEFORE they administered the contrast dye, and the rash was already developing, so now we've ruled out Gaddolinium as the culprit.
Can't imagine that that's a GOOD thing to have happen. Just wondering if it causes any lasting damage - probably just nervous after the recent articles about women getting mammograms and increased risk of cancer, etc.
Has anyone experienced this rash after MRI, or heard of it?
Thanks,
Shell
