I just wanted to tell everyone that the other day my neighbor, who I never talk to, came over and told me that I inspired her to go and find a job because she seen me go everyday into work, even though I have trouble walking. She couldn't say enough about it. Also, my son was a senior in high school when I went through my two surgeries and now he is in the first year of medical school. He told me that by me having the sct, it inspired him to seek being a doctor. I don't think that he wants to be a surgeon though At least something good came from this whole experience Barb

Hi Barb,
I'm glad you can see some good things coming from your experience. I have been told by alot of people that I inspired them. After my 2nd year someone from my church was diagnose with ovarian cancer. Brenda came to me one Sunday morning and told me Vivan had told her if Linda can go through her ordeal she could fight her ordeal as well. Vivian was given only a few weeks to live and God bless her with 5 years and in those 5 years we bonded and become really good friends. Brenda was my inspiration her son went missing in 1990 and was never found but she always was in church and willing to help anyone and never gave up on her son later after my ordeal she was diagnose with breast cancer so we bonded as well and all three of us became good friends. We had some good times together that I will always cherish. Vivian is the one that told me that it not important why these things happen to us but what are we going do after it did happen. Afer that I never wonder why did this happen to me. I was able to make a difference. Vivian lost her battle but she in a better place now.
You never know who watching your life and I have to say good things can come out of the experience. Life is worth living no matter what you have to go through. What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

Barb, like you, my son aspires to be a doctor so that he can help me. The difference is, he is only 10! He started saying that shortly after my diagnosis, when he was only 5! He has never waivered from it and tells people all of the time with great conviction.... "I'm going to be a doctor so that I can help my Mom". Also, my 16 year old son told me just a couple of weeks ago that he had to write a paper at school about someone who was his hero and/or who he looks up to. He told me that he wrote about me! I had no idea that he felt that way. This is coming from a hormone raging, cocky, mouthy, typical 16 year old boy (although he is a good kid). That was a moment between us that I will never forget and made everything worth it. Another very inspiring moment for me................. I had my rehab at Craig Hospital in Denver. It is world-renowned for spinal and brain injuries. The degree of paralysis, etc. among patients is from very limited, to quadraplegic, to brain dead. One of the unique things that they do is have everyone in one room at the same time doing physical therapy. I was learning/practicing how to walk with forearm crutches one day. There was a man who was a quad that was strapped to a board and was put upright and left there, as his physical therapy for the day. He literally could not move anything from the neck down. Anyway, at one point when I was struggling to walk, my eyes caught his and he mouthed/said to me "Good walking". Oh my gosh. I have the chills right now thinking about it again. He was actually happy for me! I think I was an inspiration to him at the moment but little did he know how much he inspired me. I made a decision that day that no matter how much progress or not that I made, it was okay, things could be worse. Have a blessed week everyone! Kim

I like to think that I've been put here for other people to look at and think to themselves "Well, at least I'm not him", and therefore I inspire.

Hey Went, that's what I always say, you stole it from me,hehe when people whin, about their life - health, I say " Do you want to swap bodies?" that inspires them to stop the whinging!

I never sought to or thought about it, but I once confided in a friend about the problems I was experiencing from the residual effects of my SCT, which he hadn't been aware of. Afterwards he held me in probably a higher regard than I deserved, but sadly some years later he was injured in an RTA and is now paraplegic, so is having to deal with far more problems than I have. However, he still says he is inspired by my experience, but now the feeling is mutual.

Well, I could send you a picture of me in my underwear, and it would probably affect you like it does my kids--one look at me, and they gag, scream in horror, then decide to quit eating so much and start exercising more....!
Actually, watching "the biggest loser" on TV makes you realize that losing weight is not easy and takes a lot of dedication to working out, eating less, and eating nutritional foods. Since many of us cannot work out so strenously and take medications that cause weight gain, then that means we have to be tremendously dedicated to eating less and eating right. I am real good at talking the talk, but alas, not so good at walking the walk--literally! Joel
