My husband is currently having issues that could have something to do with his spine. It started with a series of falls for no reason. He has hyper reflexes in his legs. Severe weakness in his arms. Balance problems. Using a walker. The first dr scheduled him for a nerve test. When he got to the appt, the dr decided not to perform the test as he didnot believe it is a nerve problem. They gave him an MRI right away. He got the results of the MRI today. Does not look like anything is impinging on his spine but there is a white spot at c5. His MRI was sent to a specialist at another hospital. And so we wait. Problem is, we are leaving for a trip to Hawaii in a little over a week. Don't want to go with this hanging over our heads or have something happen when we are gone. So any of his symptoms sound familiar? This has all happened in the last couple weeks .

debob, I had a pain in my hip that started my issue. I then got pain in my shoulder, and woke up in the middle of the night with numb burning hands one day. Still i figured it was a pinched nerve and would go away. I then started experiencing arm pain and numbness and figured i better see a doctor. My doctor ordered a MRI of my cervical spine and found a spot at C5-C6. Due to its effects on my body i had surgery a week after they found it. It ended up being a grade II Astrocytoma. I know depending on how you feel and what they determine the white spot is you might be on watch and wait type scenario. If you read some other post on this site you will find people on a watch and wait program that monitors the tumor and they go on about there lives. Hopefully its not a tumor just some inflammation or something that will go away. I wish you the best and enjoy Hawaii.

Received a call from the doc today. After conferring with several others doctors, they came up with an action plan. My husband is scheduled for another series of mri's on Friday of his brain and spine. They want to check for any other irregularities. He is also having blood tests, including B12. After the mri's, the dr promises to give him the results right away. Most likely, at the very least, he will need to have surgery to remove whatever the spot is on c5. We wil know if we can go on vacation after the mri's on Friday.

Dear debbob. Sorry to hear about your husband's condition. I hope you get some answers with the tests he is having. I have a tumor high up in the spinal cord. My symptoms were gradual, but still only mild. I gave pins and needles in my arms and legs (constant) and tension at the back of my head and neck and shoulders (occasional). I also definitely feel weaker than I have been in the past (eg I am less able to keep up with my exercise group than a couple of years ago, although, I still persevere even though I am miles behind everyone else in a run!). I haven't had surgery; I'll put it off as long as I can.
Anyway, I am interested in the vitamin B12 test that your husband is having. I had a vitamin B12 deficiency at the time of my diagnosis of my tumor (which followed a short term illness that I had that led to the ordering of an MRI). Anyway, I never got an explanation of the vitamin B12 deficiency, and just wondered if it's related to the tumor or what they would be looking for in doing the test.
I wish you both all the best in your journey with this.
