I have just been diagnosed with a meningioma at C6. I live in a small town in northern Alaska and am trying to determine best course of action. There is a new neurosurgeon in town. My doctor said he was new and they knew nothing about him. My sister lives in Denver so we considered that I should go there. It turns out the new surgeon came from that area and the practice my sister's husband has used know him and recommended him. The Denver neurosurgeon is concerned that I might have trouble on the trip that could leave me stranded. I will see the one in Fairbanks on Friday and have to make a decision then on whether to travel. I know that rehab would be better in Denver (limited in Fairbanks) but then I would eventually have to get home again. Does anyone have recommendations? I live about 4 hours from the hospital. Any suggestions on what I can expect after surgery? They are saying 5-10 days in hospital and then into rehab--possibly to learn to walk again? I am still walking but shaky and all four limbs num and seem to be listing to one side. I like to walk but have not felt comfortable doing so for the past month. I am looking for any suggestions people have.
