Hi. I recently had an MRI and found out that I have a benign meningioma in the lining of my spinal canal. It is 4 inches long. I am meeting with a neurosurgeon this Thursday to discuss scheduling surgery and I hope they can schedule it ASAP as I am in constant pain and can barely walk. Has anyone else had this surgery? How long is the recovery? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Kajasc22, sorry you have to be here. I hope you take the next few days doing some research on this site, asking questions, etc, to help prepare for your neurosurgeon appt.
The right surgeon makes all the difference, make sure they have seen plenty of spinal cord tumors, get a second opinion if you don't feel 100% confident.
I suggest you repost this on the General board, that way your post will get the widest readership. There are lots of folks here with tons of experience who can give helpful suggestions on the kinds of questions to ask, how to best prepare yourself, etc.
By the way I had surgery to remove meningioma L3-L5 last year and I am doing great! I had lots of physical and massage therapy afterwards, walked with a cane for 8 weeks so so, was back to work by 3 months. I'm back to doing Yoga, spin class, and chasing after my kids. It's risky surgery, sure, but there are lots of good outcomes, just need to do your homework on surgeons and hospitals, and really focus on your post-surgical therapies.

I had a meningioma removed from C3-C5 in August 2010. I had a "awesome and amazing" recovery according to my neurologist. I am back to normal. The first couple of months of recovery were challenging but if you have a "get up and get moving" attitude, you will do well. Don't let that tumor get you. Be a winner (to quote Charlie Sheen). You attitude can make a huge difference. I wish you good luck and let me know how you do. There can be excellent recoveries and normal life after surgery.

Hello, I hope you are feeling a little better. My sister had a benign meningioma at C3 removed in 1983 in Newcastle. In 1992 it re-grew (due to increase in hormone levels during pregnancy) and the surgery was ok but the tumor inside the spinal column could not be removed due to risk of spinal cord damage. She went to America for Proton Beam Radiation Treatment which successfully killed the remaining tumor. I hope your surgery and recovery goes well. Regards Carol
