I used oxycontin for almost 3 yrs after surgery and never experienced a "high" like some have indicated in these posts. Naturally, there's a physical dependency but that is NOT to be confused w addiction (as in crushing them up and snorting them or something equally as stupid). I also maintained my position as a software developer while on oxycontin. I waited almost a year after surgery before asking my neurosurgeon for it (was taking large amounts of percocet w acetaminophen) because I was scared to take it! I read a book on pain management, became a little more knowledgable, lost my fear and had my first full night of uninterrupted sleep. My tumor came back and I'm on methadone now (another drug w/an undeserved bad rep) because my pain mgmt doc says it addresses the nerve pain better. Neither of these drugs are "magic" pills but they do help keep the pain at tolerable levels. Also, statistically very few people that genuinely need these drugs become addicts.
