Tony, I totaly understand when you say that the inside muscles are numb but you can feel the outside. That is how most of my left leg feels.
I too didn't have problems with proprioception. However, if I close my eyes I do loose my balance and I will never be able to pass a field sobriety test. LOL
Almost all of my numbness is from the waist down, although I consider myself lucky because I can walk fairly well and even gained back the ability to run a short sprint (this came back 2 years post surgery).
I have to watch the ground really carefully when I'm on an uneven surface and still trip a LOT, but I walk and get around much better than I ever thought I would.

I'm so sad to hear Jennifer and others say this (I also say it). You want to just wake up and realize it is all a bad dream, right? BUT--we simply HAVE to concentrate and dwell on positive things we can still do--eat, watch, read, sing, type, drink, er, hmmm.....OK, now I'm depressed! BUT, I'm going to go home tonight and do some of these things! And do them well! Please don't get too depressed. Joel
