Hey all, just wanted to share my wonderful news that I swam today!!!!!!!!! I looked like an idiot crawling into my friend's pool today, but once I was in there, I did it. My legs felt really wierd at first, like they wanted to float all by themselves, but then I just focused on the bottom of her pool, and where my feet were and forced them to stay on the bottom. Then, I slowly let them come up ( on MY terms, NOT theirs...LOL), then I started kicking and swimming, like I used to before my whole ordeal. It felt pretty great. When the wind hit my legs upon getting out of the pool, they felt soooooooooooooo heavy and slow, but at least I did it, on my terms, NOT my feet's. ;D

Congratulations! I bet it was great! I haven't thought about swimming much, do you think it was alot easier to move your feet and legs when your in the water? I've always wondered if i could move more if I was in water and how it would affect spasms and tone.

Wow! I always wondered if my legs would be able to kick in a pool but has been too afraid to try. Like you, the real chore would be to get to and into the pool. Boy, if the legs worked, I could actually look like everyone else in the pool. Thanks. Barb

I do pool therapy once per week at a re-hab hospital and found it to be extremely beneficial to strength building and balance. I do spend a lot of time in a wheelchair, but can do short distances with a walker...the pool walking has helped with improving my walking on dry land. They have found water therapy to be very beneficial for people with spinal cord injuries as the bouancy helps you move muscles that you may not have the strength to against gravity. We love our Pool Party Thursdays and I would recommend anyone to give it a try.

I went swimming today too, for the first time in ages. It felt glorious. In the water, I couldn't feel any tingling. Teresa

How wonderful. Swimming seems to have a prolonged good effect on the pain in my legs. The little kids always look at me funny as I get out with my skinny left leg and my stick. Sometimes it's really good to be different.

Let us ALL swim this summer and enjoy ourselves! I found it to be very relaxing and once I started kicking and paddling around, I didn't feel like I looked any different to anyone else, as long as nobody bumped my legs or feet, I was okay.
