Hi! Dr. Jallo was able to perform a gross total resection on Luke last June. However, he said there was what he called a "film" of tumor cells remaining ( no masses; just a "film"). Dr. Jallo recommended we do the chemotherapy as a follow-up to the surgery to deal with these residual cells. My son has 2 rounds left of a 12 month regimen....yippee...I will be psyched when we are done with chemo! We have had varying times for our MRIs. So far he has had 12 to 15 MRIs ( full spine with and w/o contrast). The one he had down post-op at Hopkins was the fastest...only about 1 hr and 15 mins. (w/sedation). Most of his MRI's take 2 to 2 1/2 hrs to complete. He just started doing the MRI's without sedation....but, either way they take about the same time. He has an MRI every 3 months, and the past 2 MRI s have shown continued shrinkage of the syrinx affiliated with the tumor removal...and there is no visable tumor masses...so we are praising the Lord for His goodness! The Caringbridge site limits how much you can write for your story...so I had to chop off the ending. At some point, I'd like to organize his journey and have his story added to the spotlight stories section of this website

Thanks for the information regarding the chemotherapy and MRI's. Our son's surgeon had told us that if our son has a 2nd surgery, it might be followed up with radiation to kill any cells left over and avoid any further re-growth. But we're just taking it one day at a time because I don't even know what that would entail, and what are the side effects.
Did your son have both surgeries done by Dr. Jallo?
How did you deal with telling Luke about the 2nd surgery? Since all innocense is gone, I'm dreading telling my son, it just breaks my heart.
Luke's story definately gives us hope that everything is going to be OK if our son does need a second surgery. Thank you for sharing his story and I wish Luke continued good health.
