Hey everyone. Yet again I'm at a point in live with my spinal cord tumor and needing advice from this knowledgeable group. I just found out I'm pregnant with my first child. Its fantastic and all but the worst part of it... what about all the meds I'm on because of my inoperable subependymoma (Spelled wrong)? I'm currently on Baclofen, Neurontin, Fentynal, cymbalta, a daily antibiotic to prevent UTI's, and occasionally oxy. Do I just wean myself (with the doctors help of course) off these meds? Has anyone else on the board been through this situation? I'm really worried because at one point last winter I tried to lower my doses of a few of them and it was HORRIBLE! Well thanks in advance for all the advice. I really want you all to know how wonderful it is to know you can come to this site and be with others who understand you 100%. Have a good SUNDAY everyone!

Katherine, Baclofen, Neurontin, and Cymbalta have to be wean or tappered down. All of the meds except oxycodone/oxycontine can be taken in preganacy. Baclofen, Neurontin, and Cymbalta are category C, meaning not safe in preganacy. Categories A and B are considered safe. As far as your antibiotic, well you didn'nt mention the name. Some antibiotics are safe in pregnancy and others are not. You really need to talk to your OB/GYN and especially your Neurosurgeon on tappering and stopping your meds; as you body may go through some "HORRIBLE" times without them.

Katherine, congratulation on your pregnancy. If you go to the main page of the website on the left click on spotlight stories scroll down to Margie. Margie had an sct as a child and had one child then later on got diagnosed with another tumor and had another child. I'm sure she would be glad to talk to you. Also Deidre from NZ but not now lives in Australia has had 2 children as well and been through sct twice she would be a good one I will get Deirdre over here she also has an myspace page so you two might want to connect by that as well. Offhand those 2 are the only ones that come to my mind. I know there is a few that had a child then than got diagnose with the sct after they had their baby.
I wish you the best. Take care of yourself.

Hi Katherine, Linda's on the job and told me about your post, so here I am. First and most importantly.... CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PREGNANCY!!! Thats AWESOME!!! I really hope you can take the time to enjoy the experience, in spite of all the concerns about your meds and SCT situation. I may not be all that much help as I wasn't on any meds during either of my pregnancies. I had my first surgery in July 1998, Cody was born 2 1/2 years later in Dec 2000, another surgery in Jan 2002, and then my little bundle of energy and determination, Leo, arrived in August 2003. I've been through a pregnancy and first 12 months with a child while I had a tumor on board as well, so I know what a challenge it can be at times. Its probably easier if you email me direct with any questions you may have - deirdreamies@hotmail.com, or you can contact me through my MySpace page - www.myspace.com/emc2princess. I'll answer anything at all, don't be afraid to ask! Take care.

Hi Katherine,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I had my SCT surgery on July 23, 1990, and my oldest son was born on July 24, 1991. My second son was born May 7, 1993. It can be done!
I sailed through the pregnancy and had two c-sections - both births ended up being emergencies, but had nothing to do with my back. The only concern the doctors had about my back was that scarring my interfere with the epidural, but it didn't.
I have to add though, that I wasn't on any meds at all.
God bless and congrats again!
