I haven't felt like I have felt for the last 2 days since before my surgery. I am not entirely sure what's going on. last week was not very good, i had a piece of metal removed from my eye (ouch) and I had my vocal cords checked (not fun) because I have been losing my voice everyday in the afternoon. the ENT shoved a camera up my nose and down my throat and told me my vocal cords were swollen (most likely from the viral cough and bronchitus I had spanning from the last week in december till about mid february.
the ENT prescribed a short round of prednisone.
I feel like a new person. I didn't limp today, even after working out, I was able to have stamina to work all day with no pain and stand straight. I have had 2 of the most productive days in my life.
did a little reading, while prednisone is good for making me feel good, it's ultimately a bad little drug that can't be prolonged. that's a little sad really because this feels great.
I am going to have to see if there is an herbal equal.
anyone experience anything like this with prednisone?

Todd,
Before and right after my surgery I was prescribed Dexamethasone which is also a corticosteriod. The way i understand it, Prednisone is 4 to 5 times stronger than hydrocortisone and dexamethasone is 40 to 50 times stronger than hydrocortisone. Essentially work the same its just that the dexamethasone lasts longer. Anyway back to your question, prior to my surgery this drug was a must for me to be able to function. As you stated this is a bad drug you don't want to be on for any length of time. My mood and appetite got way out of control. One day i decided to try and stop taking it (since my surgery was less than a week away). WRONG MOVE. The neck pain was so intense I couldn't stand it. Of course i got right back on it and the neck pain disappeared and I felt like Superman again. What a shame this type of drug cannot be used for ongoing maintenance.
Sorry to hear about your eye. Hope that gets better soon! Regards - Jeff

Hi Todd,
I was on dexamethasone for just over 3 months and I felt pretty much as you do. I had bags of energy, felt almost 'high' sometimes and had no post surgical pain whatsoever (admittedly this may not have been just down to the steroids). The increased bursts of energy were particularly helpful to me as they motivated me to move and use my legs more. On the downside, I didn't like the swollen face, the dreadful insomnia/hyperactivity at night or the increased body hair - probably not so much of a problem for you!! People often complain of gaining weight but I remained drastically underweight and skeletal the whole time; not good given my condition. All said and done I am actually considering asking my doctor for this drug again as I understand it reduces swelling and inflamed nerves (I've been in agony since November with neuro pain). Anything's worth a try!!

i'm on the taper off doses now. cruel and unusual, cruel and unusual. pain is back in force. didn't help that I felt so good at the beginning of the week that I worked out like I had no ailments. paying for that now. what a maroon.

Hi Todd, Sorry you are having issues. Hope you start feeling better. Have you ever had dry needling? I have had it twice and it seems to keep my pay at bay even through 2 very stressful weeks and usually stress leaves me in a lot of pain. Here is an article on herbal alternatives: www.ehow.com/way_5220396_herbal-alternatives-prednisone.html

betty, I have done some reading on that and am willing to try anything at this point. I forgot what it was like to not be in pain all the time and to have stamina to make it through the day without rushing to get to a place so I can sit down and be comfortable.
going to give it a try

I took two capsules, 550 mg. each with breakfast. I didn't really notice any difference for the nerve pain but my feet were tingly. I know it increases circulation so maybe that was the result. Tomorrow, I plan to take it morning and evening to see what happens.
