It has been one year since the surgery. Still dont like the way things are but I am able to get around and do most things I want to. The golf game has gone to hell because I cant practice like I used to and after 9 holes the back is gone and it takes a day of rest to recoup. I think I will just give up the game of golf becaue it is so hard on the back. Went skiing three times this winter. Had one really good powder day. My 11 year old son is getting really good and even likes it when I have to take a break because he gets to ski a few runs by himself. I usually ski about three runs with him and then sit out about three runs. Work is great but the company I am now with just went into bankrupcy and I have a chance to go back with my former employer. Dont want to go but cant take the chance that my current company will go out of business. Dont think anyone in the avaition business will hire me with the back the way it is. Dont post on here very much but do check the post now and then. Yall are a big help. Gary

Gary, it can take more than one year in the healing process. Be thankful that you can even attempt golf or skiing. Just the fact that you can try these things is amazing. Look for other hobbies that aren't so stressful to your body. As for the workplace, they cannot discriminate against you. If you cannot do the job, that is one thing. But they cannot flat out deny you the chance to try it. Chin up, better days ahead! Cindy

Skiing the first year - that's pretty aggressive. It took about 3 years for me to feel like normal. It's a long process so don't get discouraged. What you accomplished already is enough to be satisfied with. I'm going well past 5 years now and it's getting better.

Hi Gary. I say don't give up golf! If you can only do a few holes right now, then so be it! Do you wear a back brace while you are golfing? That helps me immensely when I am doing "stuff" like that. Also, like everyone else is saying, one year is not enough time to get to your plateau. It has been five for me and I am still progressing. BUT, I have found that the progression is not going to happen on its own, you have to push yourself. What I mean by that is, if you don't try things then how will you know? My latest accomplishment has come with/during my daily walk around my neighborhood (using my cane). The route that I take has a pretty steep hill. Normally when walking up the hill, my left leg/knee stays "locked" in place. By pushing myself I can now bend my knee when going up the hill like you are "supposed" to do. I have been so excited about that and have even shown my kids how proud I am of myself. Don't get me wrong, it is akward but the fact that I can do it is huge to me.
Hang in there!

I dont think I am ready to give up golf quit yet. Did buy a new rifle that is not so hard on my neck. The elk rifle is great but after about 6 rounds I am done. The new ar hardly kicks so I can stay out at the gun range as long as I want. Still finding out what I can and can not do. My eleven year old keeps me going and trying new things. g
