I had surgery to remove grade 2 ependymoma at the C2 and C6 in April of 2015. After surgery my doctor said he thought he removed 80% of tumor. However, I have learned that this isn't the case. Pre surgery the tumor was 23x18x21 mm. Post surgery it is 23x15x18 mm. Doctor stated that there was noticeable difference in color between cord and tumor but that there were blood vessels in or close to tumor which prevented him from proceeding with complete removal. He now is recommending radiation for the rest of the tumor. I received 2nd opinion and that hospital is recommending a possible second surgery and no radiation at this time. My surgeon is adamant that no more tumor could safely be removed. I have studied my mri and the surgery notes closely and I was in surgery for around 6 hrs. Does this seem long enough for this surgery, what is normal? I am nervous about a second surgery but also realize that typically the more tumor that comes out, the better the outcome. I have Dr. Jallo involved now and am hoping he can provide some clarity, I am confused on what to do.. More surgery or radiation?
Thanks

Dr. Jallo is the foremost authority on spinal tumors in the world. I would listen to him and make your decision accordingly. Sometimes we listen for the answer we want to hear and not the correct one. It's just human nature in a crisis. Remember 90% of the information is just wrong BS.

I am helping a relative who just was diagnosed with an intradural extramedullary tumor at T12. I appreciated reading the FAQs written by Jallo and listened to the audio recording of his presentation from the 2011 conference. Can I ask what gives you confidence that Dr. Jallo is the foremost authority on SCTs? This would help us figure out whether a trip to Hopkins is in our future... Thank you!

He wasn't my NS, but he has had the most experience and surgeries according to patients on the board, the only SCT board I know of. A person who does the majority and seen the majority, 1 out of a million would be the best IMOP. My own NS is considered one of the best because he cured me. If he didn't, I wouldn't consider him the best, just how we think.

He did my wife's surgery, and we couldn't more happy. He really is the one to talk too. In my eyes he's # 1 in the world.
