Hi,
My name is Liza and I'm 12 years old. I was recently diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor. I was told by 2 different doctors that surgery would be too risky and I could possibly do chemotherapy or wait for it to possibly grow. Lately though, I've been feeling pretty down about my situation and was wondering if there was anyone else who might have been in or is in a similar situation and understands this. If so, please feel free to write back.
Thank you! Liza

Dear Liza. I'm sorry to hear about your spinal cord tumor. And you're only 12 years old. I'm a bit older than you (45), and it was horrible for me to find out about my tumor too. I found out in January this year. I've also been told that it's too risky to do surgery. Mine is very high up in my neck. I'm leaving it alone for a while, trying to find out what it's doing. I hope I won't need surgery but the doctor says that I most probably will. It's just a matter of when. Where is your tumor? What are your symptoms? I hope that your mum and dad are getting as much information as they can about how to best treat it and whether it's best to wait. Can I just say how wonderful it is that you're looking for information on your condition. Good on you! I hope you get lots of help from people on this forum and elsewhere. Keep positive and take it day by day. It's what helps me get through. I wish you the best. D

Hi Liza,
You write very well for a 12 year old!
dmdgood asks some very relevant questions, and provides some good advice.
As you will see from my signature box, my son has a spinal cord tumour, which was diagnosed just before his 4th birthday. He will be 12 in July this year, and is doing very well. Given that he had surgery when he was 4, he probably doesn't recall much about the situation (and the surgery was performed as soon as the tumour was found) he might not be able to relate to your exact situation. However he did receive radiation therapy almost 3 years ago, is well aware of his tumour, and that might be relevant to you.
If you are interested in communicating with him, please send me a PM with one of your parent's contact email addresses (or get them to send me a PM themselves). I would also be happy to speak / email them from a parent's perspective.
I should warn you that my son will probably be more interested in playing Minecraft or some shoot-em-up game rather than talking about tumours...but he might be willing to talk....
