Hello,
First post here - looks like there is a wealth of information here.
I've had some pretty severe back pain in the evenings and upon waking since about April now. I've tried everything - ice, heat, not working out, working out, firmer mattress, soft mattress, pillows under, between knees, slightly deflated air mattress (this is by far the best so far) but the pain stays exactly the same. Rolling over is the worst pain. Dr ordered massage, then xray. He told me Xray showed gas between my discs and that I must have an injury but I don't remember any specific day the pain started - it seemed to creep up on me.
Then ordered pelvic and lumbar MRI. Pelvic MRI showed 2 tarlov cysts then says "however on the left side there is a more fusiform appearance at S3-4 to the left side with a 1.9cm x 1.7cm x 1cm bulbous area which extends into the presacral region to the anteromedial margin of the left piriformis muscle. An MRI study with Gadolinium is recommended to exclude a nerver sheath tumour" Lumbar MRI showed moderate DDD with mild-moderate narrowing of the neural canals possibly causing slight irritation of exiting L5 nerve roots. Also found a 1.7cm lesion on my spleen - suggested an ultrasound to further evaluate.
My GP is certain it's not a nerve sheath tumour because they are so rare but there hasn't been any explanation of what else it could be. I assume a cyst of sorts? Thankfully my MRI is in a few days and hopefully I won't have to think much about it after that but I'm just curious if anyone has had any experience with more common masses in the S3-4 area?
Cheers, Kim

Hi Kimberly,
Gp's don't know squat about spinal tumors and for that matter, most anything spinal related. You need a good neurologist to consult with.

Thanks, good point. I have my MRI with the dye this morning and I'm sure it's nothing major - google just makes every fusiform shaped thing sound quite serious. Regardless when the report is in from today I'm going to ask for a specialist again. GP said we had to wait until this MRI to figure out what kind of specialist it would be. Crossing my fingers for no other incidental findings. It was a crappy sleep last night and no coffee or breakfast until this is done, I didn't realize how much it had been weighing on my mind until last night - looking forward to putting it behind me.
