I have been on the neurontin (Gabapentin) on and off for the last 2 years. It does not do much for me for the stabbing pain but seems to make the burning sensations more bearable. Side effects are many: tiredness, lethargy, constipation. There was recently an article in JAMA saying that the tests justifying using it as a pain medication (it is basically the drug for the epilepsy) were very poorly designed and the results are inconclusive. Take care - being distracted is a good medicine. Sophie

I've been on Neurontin for about 1 1/2 years. It doesn't take the pain away completely, but I am able to bear it most of the time. I am able to work full time, but not much more. They cost is being very sleepy and sort of flat and a little more stupid than usual. My GYN told me I was doing well when I saw him for a check up in July. He said "most people on Neurontin aren't quite right". I guess that is a compliment. I am thinking of asking my pain doctor about weaning it off a little bit to see how I do. I am on tons of it. I'd like to see if I can function better on a lower dose. Good luck in your search....

I am on a combination of Neurontin and Baclofen and have valium for spasms/muscle tension episodes. I do not often need the valium. Since starting the Neurontin/Baclofen the burning sensations are better controlled. I believe it is primarily the Neurontin because I was on it in the summer and then taken off it and the pain spiked. I was put back on it and the pain is better controlled. If I am hurting and it is time to take it, the hurt recedes some within a half hour.

I took Neurontin in the beginning after surgery for about a year. There are side effects that I encountered and it was more along the lines of Weight Gain. I could not tolerate it in that regard. I am on tramadol for the muscular aches and pains but that is the only one. Alternative to Neurontin is Lyrica you may want to look into as well.

I tried Neurontin after my surgery 7 years ago and for a while it was pretty worthwhile, I guess. I was on a very large dose of it. After a while it seemed to stop doing whatever it had been doing for me and since I was on the maximum dose I decided to be weaned off of it completely. I find that when my legs feel so heavy that I am not able to stand on them anymore (which unfortunately comes after a relatively short time) I try 2 tylenols and find a comfortable chair. It's not fun, but I have little choice. Sometimes I fight hard to get past the feeling, but I find that most of the time I just accept the feeling and give into it.

I have tried neurontin for pain and did not find anything but complete exhaution.I find Baclofen and Topamax to help me with my muscle spasms and tightness and overall uncomfortable feelings. For pain I have taken cymbalta.Lyrica which have both worked great if your pain is stronger than that you may need something stronger like oxycontin

I have been using Neurontin for tingling in my right foot for 8 years. Starting about a year ago I was able to reduce my dose. Although I have the side effects I am miserable if I don't take it. My foot buzzes me into psychosis.

It helps me with the smaller issues -- prickly, hypersensitive skin -- but doesn't seem to help as much with the clenching pain. Still, seems to be worth it, though it does dull me a bit.
